Dear Thor,

Finals are right around the corner, and I can’t focus on studying! How do I stay focused on doing well instead of going to the beach or out with my friends?

Dear Anon,

I know the feeling! The weather is finally becoming nicer when teachers are telling us to worry about finals. It may seem like an impossible feat to study and enjoy the weather at the same time, but there are ways to soak up the sun and stay on that study grind.

Getting a planner could really help you with managing your time. Setting specific times for studying motivates you to do it because you know you have a planned break coming up. Planning study time out has worked much better for me than just sitting down and trying to focus.

If you feel like you’re wasting away in your room, think about how you can go outside when you’re done with your study session. Setting up breaks is a great source of motivation, especially when the weather is nice out. If you really wanted to, you could study outside. However, I would not recommend that because you would not be able to focus on studying as well as you could in a controlled environment.

Using different study methods could make studying fun rather than boring. Different things I’ve used are eating an M&M every time I answered a question correctly or recalled information without looking at it, or allowing myself to play some Fortnite when I clear a section of the material. Rewarding yourself for retaining information is the best way to keep yourself motivated and look forward to studying.

Although going outside may seem like the better option over studying, studying will help you in the long run – and you might even have fun while doing it!

Sincerely, Thor
