Senior Richard Carey has announced that he will attend Penn State’s Altoona campus and continue his baseball career with the Nittany Lions. Carey is joining a university with a rich history of success in all sports. Penn State Altoona competes in intercollegiate athletics and plays in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. This year, the Lions have a record of 12 wins and 14 losses. RJ Barnard is the head coach of Altoona.

At Cape, Carey was an excellent baseball player. He also was a starter on the soccer team and the kicker on the football team, sporting an impressive résumé that caught the eye of Penn State.

In addition to athletic success, Penn State’s academics are excellent and most graduates get excellent jobs in the future. In college, Carey will be majoring in kinesiology. He picked the Nittany Lions because, in his own words, “it’s a great school for athletics and education.” He had other opportunities as well, including offers from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Wesley College, and Lynchburg College.

Carey’s said his favorite memory from Cape was “going to all the sporting events, playing or spectating.” Though he enjoyed his time at Cape, Carey is eager for his future at Penn State. “I am really excited for this opportunity and can not wait for what it has to offer,” he said.

Through the process, he has had help with the decision. “My parents helped me,” Carey said, “along with my travel ball coach who got me in contact with the head coach of Penn State Altoona.”

As far as his freshman season goes, Carey has good goals. “My expectations are to keep my head on my shoulders and get my school work done,” he said, continuing, “also to work my butt off to become the starting catcher.”
