It was recently confirmed at Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year summit that in 2018, Barbie will be releasing the Hijab-wearing character to the public. The brand new doll is inspired by Olympian fencer, Ibtijaj Muhammad. “I’m 100% for this new Barbie doll. Little girls need more representation from older women. This is a huge step for little girls accepting who they are and not the ‘normal’ blonde thing Barbie,” Senior Sarah Bennett said.

The 31-year-old fencer first became famous back in the 2016 Summer Olympics, hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She became recognized worldwide for being the first Muslim-American to medal at the games as well as the first women to wear a head scarf while competing.

“Thank you @Mattel for announcing me as the newest member of the @Barbie #Shero family! I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true!” — Ibtihaj Muhammad (@IbtihajMuhammad) tweeted November 13, 2017.

Shereos are Barbie dolls based off of female heroes that are breaking down boundaries for woman everywhere and inspiring young women to expand their possibilities. Other dolls in the Shereos collection include Writer and Director Ava Duvernay, plus sized model Ashley Graham, ballerina Misty Copeland, and golden medalist Gabby Douglas. Ibtihaj Muhammad’s Barbie will be added to the collection in 2018
