Should stores really be open on Thanksgiving? Many Cape students believe they should stay open for two main reasons: the traditional Thanksgiving feast, and shopping.

Black Friday has been a tradition since 1952 and for many stores it starts at 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving. If stores close on Thanksgiving, many shoppers that normally wait outside their favorite stores’ entrances will be scrambling to get in the next day. There will be too much of a frenzy for shoppers, and it will become very late and overwhelming for workers if stores decide to open at midnight and close at midnight the next day. “I always go out really late on Thanksgiving for deals. I’m not about to go out all early the next day to catch them,” Sophomore Taylor Dade said. On normal Black Fridays, there’s fighting, screaming, and in worst case scenarios, death. Imagine if stores didn’t give shoppers the early start they need to dial back the craziness – blood would be spilled.

People procrastinate much more than they did in previous years. Everyone waits to do at least one important thing until the last possible second, whether it be Christmas shopping or submitting an essay. Families procrastinate on preparing feasts and hosting people at their house more than they did before, and if grocery stores are closed a lot of families would be out of luck. “I definitely think that most families go out on Thanksgiving to get their dinners because they don’t feel like preparing it themselves. I’m gonna be one of those people,” Senior Shawn Gray said.

If stores were closed on Thanksgiving, hunger and chaos would ensue.
