The 2018 Winter Olympics will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea. This will be the second time that South Korea has hosted the Olympic Games. The games will start with the opening ceremony on February 9th, 2018 and go until the closing ceromony on February 25.

Pyeongchang earned its position as the olympics host on the first round of voting, receiving more votes than both Munich, Germany and Annecy, and France combined. Most of the games will take place at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium along with the ski slopes for the outdoor events.

There are an estimated 92 nations/countries planning to compete and four new events have been added. These include now being able to compete in big air snowboarding and freestyle skiing on the slopes along with speed skating and mixed doubles curling on the ice.

Altogether there are 7 sports that the athletes will be competing in: biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing with 15 disciplines across all sports. There are 102 medals to be handed out to the placing athletes in each event. The medals that have been designed this year include dynamic diagonal lines and three dimensional consonants from the Korean alphabet. They’ve also been crafted with a texture to resemble tree trunks, symbolizing “the work that has gone into developing Korean culture and the Games themselves,”. This refers to the hard work and financial troubles that have occurred while trying to prepare for the games in time.

“I will definitely be watching the Olympics this year”, said Junior Claire Rasin. “I think they’re fun to watch and they only happen every couple years”.

The mascot this year will be a white tiger named Soohorang. The mascot symbolizes familiar figure in Korean folk tales as a symbol of trust, strength and protection.

To view the Olympic Games, NBC will broadcast the games on TV and online 24/7 through the whole duration of the games.
