Dear Thor,

I’ve spent my freshman year ignoring my schoolwork and not caring about my classes. This decision has come back to bite me because I now have to attend summer school. I definitely don’t want to repeat the grade, but I also don’t want to do the summer classes. What should I do?

Sincerely, Struggling Student

Dear Struggling Student,

You definitely don’t want to repeat ninth grade. If you repeat the grade it would hold you back from all of your friends and classmates and cause you to have to do double the work you would normally need to do. No one would want this situation, and I can’t imagine you would either. Instead of doubling your workload, you just need to persevere and get through this year’s summer school so that you can be promoted. By getting through the classes and actually putting in the effort, you can pass your classes and avoid having to repeat. By ignoring your work and just failing your way through high school you’ll just be adding more work for yourself than otherwise needed. You don’t need to be an A student; you just have to put in enough effort to pass to the point that you and your family are happy with what your doing. Just put in the effort and you will be rewarded with many summer school-free summers, and no unwanted extra years toward your education than required. Besides this advice, all I can say is to just deal with the situation you’re in and work to make it better.

Sincerely, Thor
