The teacher of the year award is title that is given to one teacher every year. Each school in the district start by selecting a teacher they would like to nominate for the title. Next, selected teachers from each school will get together and one of them will win Teacher of the Year.

Out of everyone there, Freshmen Biology teacher, Mr. Harrod, came out as the winner. “[it feels] amazing still in shock but I’m extremely honored,” he said about his new title. The winning itself was quite a shock, and the people wanted a speech and he had not prepared one as Mr. Harrod was “completely surprised [that he won]. I did not expect to be picked.” He also added “I was up against some good teachers” For his speech he “spoke from the heart” and talked about “how cool and better all the teachers in the Cape district are and how my wife pushed me to be better.” This was his first time winning the coveted title.  Mr. Harrod said “I’m still figuring it out, but I have to make a video and submit some more stuff to the state.” Perhaps there’s another competition coming up.

As for Mr. Harrod’s history as a teacher and how he got here. He got his degree from Wilmington University and his masters from American College of Education. He has also been consistent in his teachings. “For 12 years, I taught every day of my career here at Cape Henlopen High School. I’ve been a biology teacher my whole life,” He said.  Mr. Harrod will likely continue teaching for more years to come.
