On My Block is a Netflix Original Series that was released on March 16, 2018. The show became popular at the beginning of April, with people tweeting about it and following the actor that plays Cesar on Instagram at a rapid rate.

On My Block is about a group of four friends (Jamal, Cesar, Monse, and Ruby) living in a rough neighborhood in central Los Angeles. They are all going through their freshman year of high school while dealing with their personal problems, which are not “normal”. Cesar’s brother is in a gang, but his friends are trying to save him from that life – while Ruby is living with his mom’s friend’s daughter, who he happens to be in love with.

The love triangle in the show is very complicated because everyone in it are friends, but everything unfolds in a satisfying way – right up until the last two minutes of the last episode. “The plot twist was crazy, it made me upset, but it’s fine,” says Freshman Andrea Haro-Simental. The plot twist at the end left everybody shocked and in absolute awe.

The show was renewed for a second season on April 13th, and the actors have all expressed their gratitude on their social media accounts. Cesar, arguably the best-looking character on the show, has caught the attention of teenage girls (and boys) everywhere. “Cesar is the hottest guy on the show, duh,” Freshman Shami Purnell said. Diego Tinoco, the actor that plays the role, has the most followers out of the four main characters with 500,000. “I do follow him on Instagram,” says Purnell.

The show appeals to teenagers because of how accurately it portrays the struggles of high school. “Besides for the gang stuff, it shows what high school is like, especially the scene where they go to the school dance,” Sophomore Aubrey Munn said. The subjects the show touch on are subjects that are rarely seen on television, like gang violence and the problems that friend groups have in the areas we tend to avoid.
