It broke to the public on October 5th that Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has had financial settlements with 8 women for sexual misconduct. Once that story was out, sexual assault accusations directed towards Weinstein just kept coming. People have been simultaneously disgusted and saddened by the news as it grows more gruesome each day.

This all started with the 8 women in the settlement. Actress Rose McGowan was given a $100,000 settlement in 1997 after Weinstein assaulted her in his hotel room. Another actress, Ashley Judd, was accosted by Weinstein in a similar way, in his hotel room when he offered her a massage and to watch him shower. Most women affected by Weinstein said about the same story; They were asked to meet privately in his hotel room to discuss business, and he would pressure them into sexual acts in return for a role in one of his upcoming movies.

Other actors have also come forth to talk about their experience with Weinstein. Terry Crews said on twitter that he once attended a party where Weinstein groped him in front of Crews’ own wife. Actresses Gwenyth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Rosanna Arquette, and Judith Godrèche admitted to stories resembling those of Judd and McGowan.

Unfortunately, many people feel that this is not an unusual occurrence in Hollywood. Screenwriter Scott Rosenberg is on record saying that “everyone knew about Weinstein’s illicit activities” when Rosenberg worked with Weinstein. It is true that often young actresses are put in uncomfortable positions with producers and directors when being cast in movies, and Weinstein’s scandal is just one example of this happening.

Students were upset and disappointed to hear this story. Senior Evangeline Dillard said, “This kind of thing happens a lot in Hollywood I’m low-key not surprised. To women this scandal probably isn’t a surprise, it’s really only the men who are fooled into thinking this doesn’t happen often. Sexual assault isn’t taken as seriously as it needs to be.” Additionally, senior Anna Ives-Michener added, “He’s a bad man. But I think It’s great that people are supporting the women who were affected by Weinstein.”

After all the press attention, women have been sharing their own experiences with sexual assault on social media with the hashtag #MeToo. Hopefully, from this scandal receiving so much attention, celebrities like Weinstein will consider the effect of their actions, and employees in Hollywood will stop concealing such incidents.
